RP nurses seeking US jobs number 15,000 in first 9 months of ’08

A TOTAL of 15,079 Filipinos took the United States licensure examination for nurses for the first time from January to September 2008, indicating they wanted to seek employment in America, former senator Ernesto Herrera, secretary-general of the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP), disclosed Thursday.

Senator Richard Gordon on Friday said the country’s 43,000 public schools still lack nurses and nursing aides despite the huge volume of nursing students graduating annually. In a press statement, Gordon said only 3,254 nurses are attending to more than 17 million pupils in the public schools across the country.

A nurse staffing agency in Germantown is involved in dozens of lawsuits with nurses from the Philippines, saying that they skipped out early on three-year contracts after the agency worked for years to get them visas to work in the United States.
